In 2005, the Corridor Free Wireless Project ("cFree") was launched in Downtown Cedar Rapids, Downtown Iowa City and Coralville. A bold community project, cFree was created to give free access to the internet via wireless technologies in a number of key public spaces throughout the Corridor. The project was born as a community driven and community funded not for profit venture and is currently overseen by a volunteer board comprised of constituents from The James Gang, Cedar Rapids Downtown District, City of Coralville, City of Iowa City and Bradley & Riley.
Unfortunately in the Spring of 2006, cFree found out that the wireless materials donated for the Downtown portion of the cFree network were faulty and would need to be replaced. Beginning in the Fall of 2006, fundraising efforts were started by Rob Pilaszewski of The James Gang and Vanessa Solesbee of the Cedar Rapids Downtown District, both members of the cFree Board of Directors.

In a collaborative move aimed to ease travel and wait times for Downtown workers, the Downtown District, Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, the City of Cedar Rapids and Union Pacific Railroad Company have reached an agreement on new “train-free windows” in Downtown Cedar Rapids.
These windows will occur around the peak morning, lunch and afternoon travel times: 7:45 – 8:15 a.m., 11:45 – 1:15 p.m. and 4:45 – 6:00 p.m. There may still be occasional train delays due to short train movement during the morning window and at the tail end of the afternoon window, but Downtown workers should notice the difference in travel times almost immediately.
