Before moving to Cedar Rapids in July of 2006, I had the tremendous pleasure to live, work and play in Downtown Austin, Texas, one of this country's most active and exciting cities. And while Austin offers a variety of first-class arts, music, culture and entertainment opportunities on a nightly basis, quite a few of those options are cost-prohibitive and hard to gain access to for the general public. Similarly, you won't find yourself rubbing shoulders with local politicians, invited to community planning forums or asked for your personal opinion on the state of the city, unless you know someone who knows someone (or have a lot of money behind you).
A Cedar Rapidian for seven months now, I am still astonished daily at the way that this community opens its arms to new residents. The ease with which anyone (young, seasoned, or in between) can gain access to affinity groups, boards, clubs, etc. is something that is wonderfully new to me. When I look around Downtown Cedar Rapids, I see members of our City Council out hitting the streets, listening to the opinion of citizens; I see a community of business and property owners that care deeply about the health and success of this city; I see an amazingly intelligent (and well-organized!) group of young professionals who are passionate about their community - far from the reputed apathy that their generation is often characterized by - and most importantly, I see a City looking inward and realizing that the healthy of a community is often judged by the vibrancy of its Downtown.
This leads me to a second, and much more curious discovery about Cedar Rapids....

- Cedar Rapids Public Library
One of Downtown Cedar Rapids' most popular attractions, the Cedar Rapids Public Library, is also home to a very valuable resource. CRPL's Business Services Center is free, open to the public and includes many of those expensive databases that small businesses can't afford to access on their own.
The Cedar Rapids Public Library not only encourages local businesses to use their Business Services Center, they also want you to let them know how they can improve the collection to meet your Downtown business needs.

A powerfully moving giant screen film unlike any other, MacGillivray Freeman’s "HURRICANE ON THE BAYOU" carries audiences behind today’s news headlines on a journey deep into the soul-stirring heart of Louisiana — before, during and after the unprecedented devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Unfolding against the poignant backdrop of the most costly natural disaster in America’s history and featuring state-of-the art CGI special effects depicting Katrina’s fury, "HURRICANE ON THE BAYOU" follows a group of four musicians, both legendary and rising, as they uncover the electrifying culture of New Orleans; explore the beautiful, alligator-filled bayous on airboats; recount their personal stories of Katrina; and most of all, bring the focus to the rapidly disappearing wetlands that are New Orleans’ first line of defense against deadly storms.
