Community Preview of Downtown Parking Action Plan
The City of Cedar Rapids and the Cedar Rapids Downtown District invite community members to preview the Parking Strategic Action Plan for downtown Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, April 27, noon to 1:00 p.m., in the lower level conference room at Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust (505 1st Avenue NE).
The plan has been enthusiastically endorsed by both the Cedar Rapids Downtown District and Self Supported Municipal Improvement District boards of directors.
The plan’s boldest idea – the transfer of management responsibilities for the downtown parking from the City to the Cedar Rapids Downtown District - was introduced to City Council members at a brown bag session in March. This move would be made with the intent to protect taxpayers and restore the system’s long-term financial and operational viability.
Other highlights include six “Primary Action Items” which are designed to jumpstart the recovery of the parking system; many of these Primary Action Items are recommended to be implemented in 2010 and include noticeable improvements like multi-space meters that accept credit/debit cards.
A result of collaboration between the City, Downtown District, SSMID and countless other downtown stakeholders, this plan is a specific roadmap for implementing key elements of both the JLG Downtown Vision and Central Area Reinvestment Action Plan.
