Parking
Parking is often the first and last impression made on someone visiting or doing business in downtown Cedar Rapids.
The Downtown District is committed to working collaboratively with the City of Cedar Rapids to significantly improve the overall parking experience in our downtown core. As one of just six strategic priorities for the Downtown District in 2009, parking-related initiatives will receive significant staff and volunteer time with a strong focus on enhancing customer service and improving parking system management.

Parking Goals & Solutions:
With the help of downtown stakeholders who generously volunteer their time to develop creative solutions for the unique challenges faced by downtown parking systems, the Downtown District has identified the following key ingredients for improving the management, maintenance and operations of parking in downtown Cedar Rapids:
1) Create a parking strategic plan that aligns economic development focused parking and transportation policies with larger downtown master plans (e.g. JLG Master Plan). A parking strategic plan would include supply/demand analyses, on- and off-street technological assessments, shared parking analyses, parking revenue control and operational audits, and organizational analyses.
2) Reassess current capacity in parking ramps and street-level lots. This includes significant changes to how parking data is gathered and calculated. Parking data should be kept updated regularly to assess capacity and next steps, including the implementation of a capacity “threshold” that when reached, would indicate that a new parking ramp/facility should be built.
3) Develop consistent methods of assigning parking in parkades and in street-level lots.
4) Encourage and incent downtown workers to use multiple modes of transportation (including public transit, bikes, park & ride) to open up additional spaces for downtown visitors/patrons.
5) Train parking system managers and staff to creatively and proactively problem-solve issues that are brought forth by downtown businesses, workers and visitors.
6) Accept nothing less than superior customer service from all levels of staff
